Our series of product reviews continues - this time, the Cowon iAudio D2 DAB.
Just a quick video of a Pure One Mini digital radio to show why DAB is so rubbish and why FM should not be switched off
The Conservatives are to carry on the Labour plan to axe the AM and FM radio frequencies in favour of the inferior, shit sound quality, shit error correction, shit reception quality, outdated DAB digital radio system. The Conservative who is pushing it, unsurprisingly does NOT have a science / engineering / IT degree, but is another arts w@nker. So it must be the money that is being thrown about that is making it attractive to scrap the superior FM radio for shit DAB. Oh, and don't forget that once everyone is using digital radio, it is VERY easy for the government to take control of EVERY single radio station in the UK, something it cannot do with FM because even children can build FM radio transmitters and get their message across. This is the REAL reason for getting rid of analogue radio. Recorded from Channel 4 News, 07 July 2010.
At first look the Garmin 1490tv looks like any other in-car Satellite Navigation device, however the 1490tv has something extra, an in-built digital tuner giving access to over 50 Freeview TV channels and 24 radio stations across the UK With Nokia, Google, the Dell Streak, the iPhone and many more smartphones now providing satellite navigation, the likes of Garmin and TomTom are forced to provide more features. Adding digital tv and radio is a great example of this. Owners of the Gamin 1490tv can now listen to in-car digital radio without the need for DAB radio, 3G or wifi connectivity. The Garmin will continue to play stations such as Absolute Radio while receiving usual driving instructions and map visuals. The Garmin 1490tv provides another way to listen to Absolute Radio in great quality while in the car. With over 12 million homes in the UK now relying on Freeview to receive digital TV and Radio, Garmin's choice of this proven technology will almost certainly prompt a similar response from rivals TomTom. Perhaps TomTom will include a DAB chip in a future model. Extending this a little further with 3G connectivity means the use of technologies such as RadioDNS are then easily possible. The Garmin 1490tv is available now at around £300 direct from the Garmin website.

iBiquity has long claimed that HD Radio eliminates the static and interference typically associated with analog AM reception. Here, some RFI produced by my well pump disproves their claim -- the static causes the receiver to drop back to analog mode, and then it takes several seconds to regain the digital signal. The receiver is an Auvio HD Radio Tuner from Radio Shack. On FM it is fine, but on AM it has very poor performance, even on analog signals. WOR is the only "HD Radio" (IBOC DAB) signal I can reliably receive in digital mode on the AM band. WFAN is flakey at best, and all other digital signals just show a flashing "HD" symbol on the receiver but never can decode the digital audio. Also, the compression artifacts in the digital audio produce a very gritty, metallic sound -- very harsh and unpleasant to listen to. The analog signal from WABC sounds much better, once the receiver gradually opens up to its maximum analog AM audio bandwidth of 8 kHz. The last time I tried an "HD Radio" receiver was in 2007, and nothing has improved since then. Even on the best FM signals, the digital audio is still harsh and metallic, the digital reception is still very flakey, and radio stations still have problems synchonizing their analog and digital audio. So despite all the hype, "HD Radio" just isn't worth the money, and analog AM/FM radio still works and sounds better!
